How can Architects provide Community Service as part of their practice?
2008
The thesis of my project was that the business model of architecture - services defined and paid for by a client - was not conducive to supporting community service by architects. Given the culture of philanthropy in the United States, I travelled there to interview architects and to explore various practice models for example; not-for-profit community design centres, university-based community design studios and pro bono services provided through commercial offices. One initiative I found compelling due to its professional uptake and collective impact was ‘The 1%’ - a program which asked architects to give 1% of their time to pro bono service.
