Understanding approaches to mental health & care in the urban environment
2017
“My friend, you can’t heal a broken heart with plaster.”I found these words painted by an artist and patient on a wall in Kronstad District Psychiatric Center, referencing the vast differences in therapeutic care, support and recovery of physical illness compared to that of mental illness. However, another interpretation of these words is revealed with research. Successful mental health care begins with the built fabric in our cities. However, it is vital to recognise the coordination of social care, humane relationships and support networks which govern the therapeutic journey of recovery, contributing towards dissipating stigma around mental illness within our urban communities.
