Venice: Memento Mori
2015
Memento Mori (Latin for “Remember you have to die”) The Loop studied the city of Venice, its rise out of its marshy waterscape so many centuries ago, and the various feats of engineering enacted in the recent past to try and keep the city afloat. The patterns of its rise also predict a pattern for its sinking, and a new city that might emerge from the remains of the old. This artwork is intended to read like a memento mori of the existing city - a metaphor for the impermanence of human endeavours and of the decay that is inevitable with the passage of time.
